Assignment 1- Design your own radio station

My Radio Station
My Radio station is a community radio called charm fm and it will target teenagers from 14- to their early 30's. It will be aired in the Eastergate and Chichester area and It will play all the new releases and indie bands that many people know about ( pegasus bridge,) are an example. It will also play all the charts music and some of everyones favorite oldies. There isn't a radio station located in these areas so it will be a good chance to make one and bring the people of these's areas daily updates on events happening in the area. 

My radio will give my listeners what they need by giving them local area updates on traffic, news and events happening in the area. My radio is mainly aimed at people traveling to and from work, school and college.I will inform my listeners on the weather forecast and any flooding or bad weather warnings. My radio station will also do competitions to win concert tickets, cinema tickets for the first viewings of films, shopping trips and events happening locally. I could also compete with Radio 1 by giving local bands air time that they wouldn't get on Radio 1. 

Radio 1    Radio 1 is my main competition. Radio 1 is a contemporary hit radio radio and have been broadcasting since 1967.Their target audience is 15-29 year olds and it should also provide some programming for younger teenager. They offer a range of new music and 

support emerging artists especially those from the UK. They  provide a platform for live music 

with doing live lounges. They do news, documentaries and advice campaigns. Radio 1 have 

an amazing 42 presenters on the show. This is my main competitor because they are loved 

by so many people and all the presenters connect with the listeners. They play a good 

variety of music that reaches all types of 

genres. They get an amazing 11, 19800 

listeners a day.  The Radio 1 website features a chart which displays the most popular music of the time which will appeal to the audience which has a need to listen to the most popular music of the week. The screen grab shows a chart which is frequently updated to keep the listeners informed.

Wave 105

 Were launched in 1998, wave 105 broadcasts to the 

central 

south of England, Southampton, 

Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Winchester and Newport. 

It's the 

number one commercial radio  

for the area. They provide their listeners with the 

Souths best variety of hits and a 

comprehensive news and information service. Wave 

105 is 

also a big competitor because 

they provide a lot of news for their local areas and a lot 

of 

people listen to them mainly for 

their frequent news and travel updates. Also again they play a 

wide variety of music, that all 

listeners will enjoy. This screen grab shows the Wave 105 website and it shoes all the music in the current chart. 

This is useful for listeners, because it shows them what type of music the radio play. 







Express Fm

Express Fm are another community radio and are going to be one of my biggest competitors. 

They play very similar music to my radio, also targeting similar areas to mine.

Here is a list of the music they play, and  is going to be very similar to the music i am going to play on my radio station. 



All the stations above are potential competition for Charm FM. Each station has a good relationship with its listeners making them feel comfortable and friendly. With the UK top 40 played on all three this appeals to the listeners needs . The website contains gossip and information and each station has a twitter profile and a Facebook page to socially connect with its listeners.These main areas are the listeners needs and the stations fulfill them at different points in the day.

The reason the other radio stations wouldn't compete with mine because A specialist radio format caters to a certain interest of music taste heavy metal etc. The music played is specialist to one music taste. Kerrang is an example of a specialist radio station as its format is purely rock music. 
Gold is a format which plays music from a specific generation and the most popular music of that generation dating back. Playing classical music and music such as Michael Jackson. Angel FM is an example of a gold radio format as it plays popular music from the listeners generation.
