Podcasting Planning- Target Audience

Our radio station is aimed at 16-30 year old.We have come to this decision on research we have done on similar radio stations. Radio one is the most similar radio to ours as it's target audience is 15-29 year old, but Radio one have recently been grilled for not playing music that meets their target audience. They have said Radio one have been appealing to an older audience instead of their typical 15-29 year olds. The majority of people who listen to radio 1 are female, but not ruling out few boys that do.

A typical listener on our radio station would be 17, female, studying media at college, likes going to the cinema, going out with friends, watching television and listening to the radio. Our radio station will be based in chichester with a population of 23,731.

Research into existing products

SFX(Sound Effects) -
Sound effects(single sounds) to add comedy to the podcast.

Jingles-
The theme tune of the stations or a short burst of music. That people will recognise
and remember. They can help identify the station you are listening to. For example on radio 1 each of the presenters have their own jingle to identify their show.

Beds
Sound beds are music that is played quietly under chat, discussion and report. If the radio presenter has a guest who is an artist then tend to play their music underneath conversation. For example on the big top 40 they played Rita ora's new song whilst speaking to her.

Crossfades
When two separate sounds are merged together with one fading out and out fading in. This makes it easier for the presenter to skip from a different topic to another. For example on radio 1 when they are talking about the news they play music for that, and they slowly fade it out and fade in music of their jingle.

Tracks
Tracks are any song or single that is played on the station. What tracks are played on radio determines the target audience. So if your listening to classic fm you are expected to hear a lot of opera and calming music. If you are listening to radio one you are more likely to hear up beat, exciting music. This keeps the audience listening.

Mic
Mic is simply a shortened word for microphone which the presenters use to record their show. They also use different types of mic's like a mobile phone if they are calling a guest.

Presenters
The presenters are the main voice or voices on the show. They are talking directly to the listeners and interacting with them. Presenters also do a lot of forward promotion, like whats coming next on the show, or whats happening on tomorrows show. This keeps the listeners listening so they know whats coming.

Loop
A loop is a repeated sound or piece of music (used for comic effect) for example, when radio presenters are speaking to a guest for example one direction they might play a piece of their song on a loop.

Big top 40

In class we listened to the big top 40 which is a show that is recorded and added to different radio stations on a sunday. For example, heart and spirt fm.

They used sound effects like heartbeats when they were announcing who was number one, this added a dramatic effect and kept the listeners in suspense. They used jingles at the beginning of the show, which was (The only real time char show, the vodaphones big top 40) and this was played at the end of a song, to remind you listeners what they were listening to. They used sound bed when they were speaking to Rita ora and Angel. They played Wiley whilst talking to Rita ora and this is to keep the conversations upbeat and entreating. The played different tracks in their chart run down, this helps the listener know what type of music they will be playing on their show. They used a ''mic'' which is short for microphone to record their show. They also used a mobile phone whilst talking to Angel. The presenters kept funny conversations to keep everyone interested and keep it upbeat. They also used forward promotion which is telling the listeners whats coming up next on the show or in tomorrows show. They used loops during conversation because it was number one the week before and it keeps the conversation upbeat and interesting. They used crossfades when talking about the chart show and when they introduced Rita ora they slowly faded in her song.

BBC

The Royal Charter
The BBC Trust - BBC is established by a Royal Charter. It is a constitutional basis for the BBC. It sets out the public purposes of the BBC and it guarantees independence. The BBC is independent from the government due to this Royal Charter and agreement. This makes it different from commercial radio but...

how is the BBC funded?
The BBC makes its money mainly through TV licence. License fee is about £145 for colour TV. The BBC as an organization doesn't subject its audience to advertising which is how other commercial radio and TV make its money. BBC makes its money purely from license fee.

Is value for money provided?
Paying £145.00 is good value for money for TV and radio in my opinion. With the license fee the BBC formed a program of in depth value for money reviews carried out by national audit offices in a way that the BBC determines value for money. One report published shows that the BBC manages the costs of its support functions supports value for money. BBC's reporting of overhead costs improves transparency. So paying for a license fee is considered good value for money. One of the BBC's missions/objectives for 2012 is to make the license fee work even harder.

BBC have visions , objectives and values for the future. The BBC's mission is to educate inform and entertain. With its TV and radio stations doing so. BBC intend to make a greater improvement to quality in their output. BBC is the most creative organization in the world. BBC aim to provide value for money by providing a basic service of entertaining and informing the public. The BBC provide many services on TV , Radio and Online.
What they do? TV and multi-platform .

Task 1 assignment 2

Listener 1 -Contemporary hit
Age-15
Female
Main interest- One direction/Justin bieber , soaps/TV, social networking , iphone , gossip celebs etc.

Our listener likes pop bands and heart throbs. They also enjoy keeping up to date with all the celebrity gossip for example in OK magazine. Things like competition will keep the listener interested on our radio station.

Older audiences

Listener one- GOLD
Age-70
Female
Main interests- Baking, knitting, soaps, Gary barlow, bingo and boules.

This is our older targeted radio station. On this we would talk about the weather and we would play old classics that they remember from their childhood. We would also talk about the latest soap story's and whats going on in them, so they can keep up to date. Competitions to get holidays away. Also baking tips and hobbies.

This is a screen grab from radio 1 and this appeals to teenagers above. It does this by showing what has perviously has been played and shows what the current chart music is. It plays up to date music that teenagers will recognise and maybe new songs they may not have heard of.
